Collection of miscellaneous legal and historical documents, many relating to Gloucestershire [manuscript], compiled ca. 1675-ca. 1700.

Contents include excerpts from or notes on many manuscripts and some books, several of which were lent by John Smyth of Nibley, or Sir William Petty, or taken from the Cottonian manuscript: Sir John Fortescue's Defensio iuris domus Lancastrie; Henry Elsynege's [Expedicio billarum antiquitus] (leaf 32); John Smyth's Lives of the lords Berkeley, and their pedigrees; the register of the monastery of Ramsey; Lord Dyer's and Sir William Petty's manuscript; De rebus ecclesie Eliensis; a memorandum for packing Parliament, 1688; letters patent and scire facias' relating to Massachusetts, Connecticut, Plymouth, Virginia, Maryland, Carolina and other parts of North America and the West Indies, 1620-1686, and lists of M.P.s, 1563, 1597.

Henry Elsynge, clerk of the House of Commons, was born at Battersea and educated at Westminster. He received his B.A. from Oxford in 1625. Elsynge then spent seven years in foreign travel after which Archbishop Laud secured him an appointment as clerk of the House of Commons.
